A History Tour of Belize City

Belize City was the official Capital of our country up until 1961 when it was devastated by hurricane Hattie, which then a new capital was built further inland towards the west known to today as Belmopan. However today Belize City is still the largest and most populated part of the country and is still considered our commercial capital. The city itself is below sea level, and was once a great mahogany camp/ settlement in the 17th and 18th century when we were still under British rule. It is also the main port of entry for most guest visiting the country and has a population of approximately eighty thousand people and a land mass or around 5 square miles.

You’ll meet your guide outside your Belize cruise tender terminal and start your day with scenic sightseeing drive through Belize City. While learning of the history and culture of Belize you’ll pass interesting landmarks like the Baron Bliss Lighthouse. This white with red lighthouse was constructed in 1885 and named after one of Belize’s favorite benefactors. St. John’s Cathedral is the primary Anglican cathedral of Belize and was built in the early 1800s from bricks used as ballast on ships. It’s the oldest church in the colony of British Honduras. See the Old Belize Swing Bridge that connects the north and south of the city over Haulover Creek and is the oldest manually operated swing bridge in Central America and one of the few left in the world. Drive past the Central Bank of Belize that houses and guards the second largest jade artifact found in Belize – a ceremonial pendant worn by a king. Pass through downtown with its good hotels, casinos and the Museum of Belize.

While Traveling through the city, we will be stopping at several land marks, historical Areas and Buildings such as: The Belize Sign, The famous Baron Bliss Light House where one of Belize’s greatest benefactor is laid to rest, The Memorial Park which severs as a reminder for those lost in Battle at world war one and two and the battle of St. George’s Caye, The Central Bank and Museum of Belize which was built from bricks that were brought over in to the country as ballast back in the mahogany era, The BTL Park where the Famous Cornel Charles Limburg Landed the Spirit of St. Louis. The Marion Jones Sporting Complex, the St. John’s Cathedral, The Supreme Court, and the famous Belize Swing Bridge to name a few stops along the way.
